If, as a citizen of one of the Member States of the European Economic Area plus Switzerland, you go to work, live or simply stay temporarily in another Member State, Regulation (EEC) No 1408/71 ensures in particular that you do not lose your social-security rights. It is, however, a coordinating role, as national regulations continue to apply. Problems that occur when there are conflicts between these national legislations are increasingly being resolved.
Belgian social security covers the following areas: sickness and maternity insurance, occupational accidents and diseases, invalidity insurance, old-age insurance (retirement pension), pensions for survivors and benefits in the event of death, unemployment insurance, and family benefits.
