in 2007.
The Brussels-Capital Region is officially bilingual. However, French is the main language spoken - as in Belgium's southern region of Wallonia -
with only 10-15% of Brussels's residents speaking Dutch (known to Belgians as Flemish). Nevertheless, it is effectively a francophone island
in the mainly Dutch-speaking northern region of Flanders.
A founding member of the European Union, Brussels hosts the Union's headquarters, as well as the head offices of other international organisations such as NATO.
This, together with the city's prominence as a business centre, means there is a large, vibrant international community.
